My Green Thumb Journey
My Green Thumb Journey: From the Fields of 1981 to the Data of Today
My journey into the soil didn’t begin with a hobby; it began with a job and a dozen onion plants.
The Foundations: 1981
At eleven years old, my weekends weren't spent on a playground. I was in the fields as a migrant farm worker, helping my parents plant onions. That was my first real "signal" from the earth. Under the guidance of my parents and the field supervisors, I received a masterclass in the fundamentals: the precision of timing, the logic of spacing, the discipline of irrigation, and the patience required for the harvest.
When my supervisor let me take home a dozen onion plants to start my own small plot, a spark was lit. I wasn't just working the land anymore; I was stewarding it.

The Mentor and the Rose Bushes
While I was focused on my burgeoning onion patch, I watched my mother. She was an expert in her own right, a master of rose bushes who understood the delicate balance of maintenance and care. When I told her I wanted to expand beyond onions, she took me to K-Mart to buy my very first tomato and jalapeƱo plants.
She taught me the "tricks of the trade," but only after she instilled in me the most important lesson of all: Preparation is everything. You don't just "plant"; you select your stock with care, you prep the soil with intention, and then you begin. Those afternoons spent working on her roses and my little garden in 1981 formed the bedrock of everything I do today.

The Techy Evolution: 2026
Forty-five years have passed since those first onions took root. Over those decades, my passion evolved from a childhood curiosity into a technical discipline. I realized that the "tricks of the trade" my mother taught me were actually early forms of biological data.
Today, I call the Rio Grande Valley home, but my mission has expanded. I’ve taken the grit of the migrant fields and combined it with the precision of modern soil science. I created The Techy Green Thumb because I want to bridge that gap for you. I want to take the guesswork out of the garden and replace it with knowledge.

Why I Share This
I do this for the curious, the beginners, and the veterans alike. My hope is to spread the joy of growing your own food—not just for the harvest, but for the profound satisfaction of understanding the "why" behind every sprout. We are here to decode the science, respect the tradition, and ultimately, enjoy the fruits of our labor together.
---General Disclaimer: While my methods are built on 45 years of experience starting from those first onions in 1981, gardening is a living science. Results vary by location and climate; always garden with a spirit of experimentation.
